Midway through Joe Biden’s first speech as president today, he said something that, in any other inaugural address, would have seemed so unobjectionable as to be pointless.
“What are the common objects we as Americans love, that define us as Americans?” Biden said. “I think we know. Opportunity, security, liberty, dignity, respect, honor, and, yes, the truth.”
In 2021, however, that wasn’t just a throwaway line: It drew an ovation from the limited crowd at the event.

VATICAN CITY (CNS) Unity requires prayer, love and fighting the devil, who always sows division, Pope Francis said.
The devil “fosters division everywhere and in every way” by tempting people “with the weaknesses of our brothers and sisters. He is astute: He magnifies others’ mistakes and defects, sows discord, provokes criticism and creates factions,” the pope said Jan. 20 during his weekly general audience.

The newly-formed reconciliation committee, without the opposition and the pro-reform movement, faces a swathe of challenges ahead.
The panel which came into existence this week is an initiative of the Democrat Party. It arose during a special meeting aimed at finding a solution to the long-standing conflicts that escalated with a series of street demonstrations held by pro-reform students activists.
Parliament president Chuan Leekpai turned the initiative into a reality, approaching all sides. However, only 11 out of 21 members sitting on the committee have been named. Headed by the Democrats veteran politician Therdpong Chaiyanan, the panel comprises representatives of only government parties, the Senate, and academic institutes.
